Clayport Library recently got in touch with us to say that they had discovered this tapestry woven banner in one of their cupboards. It was part of a Community Arts Project in 1993 and was woven in Redwood Lodge, with participation from local residents and members of the Girl Guiding groups that used Redwood Lodge, as well as Guild members. The centre panel depicts the creation of the tapestry (top left), some dyeing (centre front), and some spindle spinning (right). The jumper worn by the central figure and the rug on the wall (back right) were copied from the originals, made by Guild members. The border of the tapestry represents the city & county of Durham, with various iconic structures and geological features and of course, a giant Redwood in the bottom centre to represent where it was made.
We would love to know what happened to the other 8 hangings that were made in other locations around the county as part of this project, and also, what became of the Girl Guides depicted in the tapestry above! If anyone reading this has any information that would be of help in our search for the remaining missing hangings, do get in touch with us via secretary.durhamguild@gmail.com or chair.durhamguild@gmail.com.
