Here are some photos from our fabulous flax workshop last Saturday. Cia provided us all with beautiful linen bags containing a variety of processed fibre samples, some dyed, some natural. She then showed us how to spin these up, some of us using spinning wheels and some hand spindles. Once we had a decent amount spun up, we had a go at weaving with the singles. Mine were horribly overspun so I decided to ply them and then try knitting with the plied yarn. Some of the brave amongst us had a go at creating distaffs and spinning from them, with wonderful results. Cia had also brought in a wonderful array of things made out of a wide variety of bast fibres and set us the task of identifying which items were made from which fibres - bamboo, jute, nettle, hemp, pine needles, roots, lotus and paper all featured.
All in all it was a fantastic day and we all learnt so much. A big thank you goes to Cia for all the work she put into preparing and delivering such an inspirational workshop. We are so fortunate to have such skilled craftspeople amongst our membership.
